The Metropole Hotel is inviting the people of Cork to take a trip down memory lane and embark on a historical tour of its famous building as part of Culture Night this Friday, September 23rd. The iconic hotel is this year celebrating 125 years of welcoming guests to the heart of Cork city.

The hotel has hosted Oscar winning actors, producers, directors, grammy award-winning singers and Nobel laureate writers since it first opened in 1897. The Metropole Hotel is even reported to have welcomed King Edward VII for tea on the roof when he visited Cork in 1903.

The hotel has been running historical tours for guests all summer as part of its birthday celebrations. The Culture Night tours called ‘Unlock the past of The Metropole Hotel’ take place from 5.30pm until 9.00pm.

General Manager, Roger Russell said, “We’re really proud of The Metropole Hotel’s 125 year history. The tour has proved very popular among guests in recent months and we’re delighted to be able to share it with the people of Cork for Culture Night. We’ve welcomed some huge stars over the years including Gregory Peck, Ella Fitzgerald and Walt Disney as well as being the venue for countless weddings and family celebrations. The hotel has also witnessed some of Cork’s most fascinating moments since 1897 and I hope that visitors to the Metropole Hotel on Culture Night will find it as interesting as we do.”

The Metropole Hotel was designed by architect Arthur Hill and constructed to the highest standards and opulence of the day. It was owned by the Musgrave family of merchants until 1977 when it was sold to a consortium of local businessmen. Today it is part of Trigon Hotels and employs more than 100 people.

It was a ‘dry hotel’ for several decades and is also responsible for the Cork Jazz Festival which has grown into a world-renowned annual event.
