Great Southern Killarney are proud to celebrate John Fitzgerald's incredible 55-year tenure with the hotel, marked by a wonderful party with some surprise guests! Known for his great sense of humour, generous spirit and ever-present smile, John is adored by both staff and guests alike. His commitment to Great Southern Killarney is exemplary, and his hard work serves as an inspiration to everyone around him. John plays an invaluable part in guests' experiences, consistently going above and beyond to ensure memorable stays.
John began his distinguished career at Great Southern on July 1st, 1969, and has since become a beloved and integral ambassador for the hotel, where he has worked tirelessly and with unwavering dedication. John's illustrious journey with Great Southern Killarney is marked not only by his long service but also by his extensive experience in the hospitality industry. Over the decades, when the Killarney hospitality industry was a more seasonal affair, Great Southern encouraged team members to broaden their horizons and share their knowledge. This is something John took to heart as he brought his expertise to numerous European cities, including Frankfurt, Amsterdam, London and Paris – even venturing across the Atlantic to St. Louis, Missouri. His international experience has enriched his contributions to the hotel, enhancing the guest experience with a blend of global insight and local charm.
In 1970, during an exciting chapter in the hotel's history, John was part of the team that hosted the cast and crew of the famous movie "Ryan's Daughter," who stayed at the Great Southern Killarney during the entire filming period. This historical event is just one highlight of John's long and storied career.
The team at Great Southern pulled out all the stops to celebrate John’s milestone, marking the occasion with a surprise party at the hotel attended by team members past and present, friends and family. The event was made even more special, as John’s sisters travelled from America and Spain to surprise him.
"We are immensely proud to have John as part of the Great Southern Team," said Jamie Power, General Manager at Great Southern Killarney. "His dedication, loyalty, and enthusiasm over the past 55 years have been nothing short of extraordinary. As we celebrate 170 years in business this July, I can’t think of a better person to represent the warmth and genuine hospitality for which Great Southern Killarney is famous. The wonderful reception and turnout for the party today is a testament to how loved and respected he is. Thank you, John, for being such a valued member of our work family, and an example for us all to aspire to."
