Continuing its commitment to the arts, The Montenotte in Cork unveils its annual Sculpture Exhibition, in collaboration with The Kildare Gallery. Focused on the theme of ‘Take Your Imagination on a Journey of Wonder’, this remarkable collection features contemporary works from both renowned and up-and-coming Irish and international sculptors – Dawn Conn, Merce Canadell, Simon Hayes, Petr Holecek and Valentin Bostan.

Now in its sixth year, the exhibition has become an annual tradition, showcasing The Montenotte’s dedication to supporting the arts and highlighting its vibrant design ethos. Renowned for featuring both established and emerging artists, The Kildare Gallery has a significant presence at Ireland’s largest garden festival, Bord Bia Bloom, where they have been awarded numerous medals over the years. For this year's Sculpture Exhibition, The Kildare Gallery has selected 40 pieces from 22 artists, thoughtfully curating their placement within The Montenotte’s garden landscape. This arrangement integrates a variety of plants and flowers, creating an immersive journey for visitors. The sculptures are available for purchase and incorporate a diverse range of materials from metals like bronze, copper, steel, and the distinctive medium of bog oak, glass, and ceramics.

As Ireland’s only Victorian Sunken Garden, the grounds of The Montenotte boast a heritage spanning over 120 years. After a long period of overgrowth, the hotel's landscape gardeners collaborated with Garden Designer, Dominik Cullinane to restore the gardens. Now, these grounds provide a stunning backdrop for the remarkable sculpture exhibition, alongside permanent displays of artworks from previous years. Last year, The Montenotte received the award for Best Landscaped City Hotel in Ireland, a testament to Cullinane’s skilful use of natural topography that preserves natural habitats and includes a water feature that attracts a variety of wildlife.

This year, the exhibition will feature a range of diverse sculptors all with their own unique talents and style. The show includes Dawn Conn’s bronze figurines that celebrate the simple moments and joyful imperfections of life. Dawn was recently awarded five stars for her sculpture garden at The Chelsea Flower Show. Simon Hayes, based in Kildare, specialises in steel artistry, pushing boundaries in a dynamic interplay between humanity and the raw material. Jarlath Daly, another Kildare native, sculpts in bronze, his works reflecting local sentiments, historical narratives, and the essence of childhood and nature. Valentin Bostan, hailing from Moldova and now residing in Ireland, captures the intricacies of human nature through expressive portraiture. His sculptures, marked by minimalist forms, invite contemplation, blurring the lines between reality and the realm of dreams and myths.

Frits Potgieter, General Manager at The Montenotte, said: “At The Montenotte, we are deeply committed to celebrating and supporting the arts. Our annual Sculpture Exhibition not only enriches our guests' experiences but also provides an opportunity to celebrate emerging talent and support the vibrant arts scene of Cork and beyond. We are delighted to continue working with The Kildare Gallery and look forward to the further growth and success of this cultural tradition.”

Co-owner of The Kildare Gallery, Ruth Liddle stated, “We are delighted to present a new collection of sculptures from some of the outstanding contemporary artists we collaborate with. The Montenotte’s distinctive gardens provide a captivating backdrop for this year’s theme of ‘Take Your Imagination on a Journey of Wonder’ allowing us to display these dynamic pieces in a truly unique setting. We take great pride in this exhibition and look forward to welcoming many visitors to enjoy it throughout the summer.”

The Montenotte and Kildare Gallery invites guests to experience the beauty and creativity of its annual Sculpture Exhibition daily from 10am until mid-August 2024. All visitors are welcome and are asked to register with the urban resort’s reception to be directed to the gardens.
